How to choose a camera: types and main features

The desire to preserve every moment in your memory can be embodied in photographs. However, it’s not enough to have a powerful camera on your smartphone to take high-quality pictures, you need high-quality equipment, such as the Canon 550d.

In recent years, the approach to the production of photographic devices has changed a lot, so today you can find an affordable and high-quality camera. Let’s find out what types of devices deserve your attention.

Classes of photographic equipment

If you are planning to choose a camera, you should first understand that not all devices have the same characteristics and functionality. This primarily depends on the class of equipment, which determines its application and dimensions.

Today, there are four main classes:

  • Supercompact – mainly used for taking pictures of walks, family photos, and travel. Their light weight (up to 200 grams) and small dimensions make it easy to transport the devices and carry them in your hands while walking, but they are significantly inferior in functionality to other models;
  • compact – the most popular option weighing up to 300 grams. The purpose does not differ from the previous version, but they have higher technical characteristics;
  • semi-professional (advanced) – such models are often chosen by people who are fond of photography. They weigh between 400 and 600 grams, have high-power optics, and allow for manual adjustment of shooting modes;
  • professional – quite large and heavy (from 600 grams) models. They are equipped with interchangeable optics, powerful sensors, and provide a significant number of settings that affect the quality of the resulting image.

It should be said that today supercompact and some compact models can be replaced by a smartphone, but when it comes to other categories, their capabilities far exceed the functions of gadgets.

Type of viewfinder

The viewfinder does not affect the image quality, but it is an important element because it is thanks to it that the photographer can see the boundaries of the future frame, adjust the focus, tilt the camera, etc.

There are the following types:

  1. optical – a budget option with a simple design, but it can distort the image;
  2. electronic – a small screen reproduces exactly the image that falls on the matrix. But it consumes a lot of energy compared to other models;
  3. mirror – the image is displayed using a special mirror. Such models are equipped with advanced exposure and focusing algorithms. Among the disadvantages is the possibility of equipment vibrations when shooting at long shutter speeds;
  4. mirrorless – with this technique, the light flux is transmitted directly to the sensor. These are new options that have not yet gained popularity.

Technical characteristics of photographic equipment

It is best to choose a camera with the help of an expert. Perhaps such a person is among your friends. But if not, focus on these parameters that should help you:

  • Matrix resolution – the higher the resolution, the more fine details you’ll be able to see in the picture. For printing 10×15 cm photos, models with 4 megapixels are best suited. This is the most common option;
  • screen – it is important to consider the diagonal and type of display. Displays with a diagonal of 2.5-3 inches are considered optimal. A touch screen will make it easier to manage the settings;
  • battery capacity – take into account the number of photos specified by the manufacturer. Depending on the shooting mode, it may vary, but in general, the indicator will help you navigate the capacity;
  • additional features – help improve the quality of photos. It is important to have image stabilization, which will make the frame clear. You may also need a manual shutter speed, focus, aperture, and timer;
  • manufacturer – Canon, Nikon, and Sony are the undisputed market leaders, but Fujifilm, Olympus, and Panasonic products are almost as good as they are in terms of technical capabilities.

Manufacturer

The least reliable and unpopular manufacturers include Ergo, UFO, BenQ and other little-known brands. Produce mostly compact cameras.

Pretty well-known and reliable brands like Samsung, Casio, Fujifilm, Panasonic. Often the price/quality ratio in these cameras is quite good. The main segment of devices from these manufacturers are compact and advanced cameras.

There are clear leaders among the manufacturers of photographic equipment. These companies are Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony. They develop their own sensors for their cameras and use their own optics. In almost all classes of cameras these brands are leaders in price/quality ratio. They produce all classes of cameras: from supercompacts to SLRs. Canon and Nikon are the undisputed leaders in the production of professional full-frame DSLR cameras.

There are a few manufacturers that are not widespread among people for a variety of reasons, most often high cost and special purpose. For example, Leica cameras are expensive because of the brand value for collectors, Hasselblad cameras – because of the huge resolution they are purchased exclusively for professional use.

A high-quality camera will help you take high-quality photos that will remind you of the warmest moments of your life. And if you’re also a photography enthusiast, such equipment is a must. It will help you develop your skills and become a famous photographer.
